SMOOTH SAILING w// THE SPIRIT OF TASMANIA

img_5717Tassie is a great little destination to visit for a weekend away and I do mean little –  however because it’s so little it makes for a perfect road trip destination. You can literally travel from one end to the other in a matter of hours. If you’re thinking of making the trip to see all that Tassie has to offer it won’t disappoint… you will be blown away with the beautiful beaches and abundance of wildlife. Below are a few helpful tips to make your trip to Tassie a little smoother sailing… see what I did there 😉

GETTING THERE

You know that old saying “its not the destination… but the journey”. Well for this little weekend getaway that couldn’t be more true! We decided to forgo the usual form of transport and jump on the Spirit of Tasmania. It makes it far easier once you arrive in Tassie to have your own car to get around in. So, if like me you’re visiting from Melbourne just pull up to Port Melbourne beach and set sail! An added bonus is that the ship has just been through a multi million dollar facelift giving it a very bright and modern look.

I highly recommend doing at least one leg of your trip during the day as you get to experience everything the S.O.T has to offer. This is not your usual ferry… when we boarded at 7am we rushed straight to TMK (Tasmanian Market Kitchen) for breakfast which was croissants(YUM). We then booked in to the cinema, which screens current movies twice throughout each trip. I must mention if you do a night sail the accommodation and bed setup definitely won’t disappoint! The bed was more than comfortable and the proof is in the fact that I got a good 7 hours sleep on the leg home. Dinner on board is buffet style and has some great classic selections. I chose the good old faithful Parma and chips. You can also make yourself comfortable at the bar and enjoy a drink.. or two.

Another added bonus of traveling with S.O.T is if like me you’re obsessed with your furry child, animals are more than welcome!

Once on board you almost forget you’re sailing on open waters… it really is smooth sailing. My travel buddy is notorious for sea sickness so I’m not going to lie I was a little nervous to start with but we soon learned it was a non issue.

WHERE TO EAT

When in Hobart you must make a trip down to the marina! On a nice sunny day  it is a beautiful spot to jump out of the car, stretch your legs and grab some couldn’t be fresher fish and chips… we chose Mures Seafood.

  • Mures Seafood for some great aussie fish and chips with a side serving of tasty quinoa salad
  • Mona from cafe style to fine dining. There are options for all tastebuds and wallets

WHAT TO- DO

This may seem like an odd tip when this blog is meant to give you tips on what to do in Tassie but I honestly think the best way to explore Tassie is not to plan much at all. Yes I would always recommend booking accomodation but other than that I think just jumping in your car and exploring is what all great road trips are really about. However if you’re like me and just a tad bit of a control freak keep these few places in mind for when you stumble upon them.

  • Mona for a little piece of NewYorks art culture in the sleepy state of Tasmania
  • Constitution Dock to admire the old-school boats and some great seafood
  • Table Cape for fields full of tulips and a lighthouse observation point
