A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE // SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN

If you follow me on Instagram you would know I have quite the obsession with America and recently I have felt New York has been calling my name particularly hard… One massive sign of this was when Nuffnang and Singin’ In The Rain, Melbourne invited me to the Red Carpet opening night of the musical at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

What better way to pretend like I’m in New York than to go to a “Broadway Production”. Although I’m not a regular on the musical scene whenever I do go it’s always a fun night out and reminds me of walking the streets of New York. It’s a great excuse to dress up and head into the City.

Upon arrival to the red carpet my friend and I were playing “spot the Melbourne Celebrity”. It was as though all of Ramsay Street had descended on Her Majesty’s Theatre. There was no shortage of other familiar faces such as “that lady from the block” and “that funny blonde comedian guy”.

Once the lights went down and the show began it was easy to stop looking through the audience for familiar faces and keep your eyes on the stage. As the production was set in Hollywoodland (yes you read that correctly and no it’s not a typo) in the 1920s the wardrobe was simply incredible. Even from the audience you could see the detail that had been put into these beautiful costumes.

The actors impressed beyond belief as all had to be triple threats to keep up the acting, singing and dancing for the two-hour plus production. All I could think was how tired they would be after each show, but then again I guess that’s why they’re up on the stage and I’m… well sitting on my bum in the audience.

I have to point out that this is probably the first time I’ve been very happy to not be sitting front row at any event and let me explain my reasoning. If you are in… lets say the first three rows you are in what I can only describe as “the splash zone”. You will get wet…like really wet… like they give you those plastic ponchos you get on the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios wet. 12,000 litres of water pours down onto the stage and the cast make sure more of it is left in the front rows lap than on the stage.

As the production came to a close it was obvious they kept the best till last. The whole cast comes back on stage and performs “Singing in the Rain” one last time and it couldn’t be a better ending to a great night out in New York… oh sorry I mean Melbourne.
